Yes sometimes you can just have a leak but you just as well make sure the dowel pin is updated at the same time. Now it runs better than ever ,I also put a 4in exhaust on it. The oil leak was 450 dollars a month later the front cover, new gears, new front plate, pulled inj pump to check it out, new injectors, set the valves, and labor.6100 dollars. The dowell pin fell out as it was idleing and locked up the engine. This last Oct I had the front seal replaced and a speedy sleeve put on the crank. Two bolts and you can have water pump out. Take a look at the water pump for leak at weep hole, while you are at this point. These are available from Geno's Garage or TST Products, to make 2 sources. You can buy a kit that has the crank seal, silicone for the front cover and a tab to keep the pin from ever falling out. Do a search on the KDP (killer dowel pin ). Remove the front cover to replace the front crank seal. Pull the radiator and fan shroud off, remove the belt and 4 bolts holding the dampner. You will be able to tell if the oil has been leaking from there and the dampner slinging it out. Crawl under the truck and look around the front dampner. I have fixed numerous front crank seals on the 5.9 engines. That year of truck could easily have a crank seal that is leaking. Whatever is wrong, if it runs good, fix it. I have heard of people even JB welding the pin into place and patching the hole in the case. I would have done the hole thing myself if I had the time. Fixed them both along with some other stuff for about $1400, but the labor is what kills you (I didn't think about removing the bumper an all of that, so that time would save you some money if the shop doesn't just go with the hrs. I had a loose dowel pin and a leaking seal. It could be loose, or in the worst case scenario, it could have fallen out and broken the case. Sometimes the dowel pin falls out and doesn't do anything. Either way you have to take the front cover off and look. I have a '96 that had a pretty bad leak, and everyone told me it was the dowel pin. Or what fixed yours? My friend says that this is common and a very time consuming costly repair as the front of the truck has to be stripped down, thenstrip down the front of the engine and replace the gearcase housing and dowel pin. He says most likely that a dowel pin has worked loose on the front of the block and actuallycame out and fallen into the gearcase, where a gear has struck the dowel pin and pushed it through the gearcase cover. Well anyway, on the way home I called a friend, former cummins employee, who told me this was unlikely that he had seen very few with a bad crankshaft seal in the front cover.

The neighbor I bought it from told me it did and he said it was the seal in the front cover leaking and that he had already bought the seal and just hadnt had time to install it. This one has a severe oil leak on the front of the engine. We have had 7 of these before this one and never had an oil leak.
Yesterday I bought a Dodge truck with a 5.9 Cummins as an extra truck to keep around the farm. Posted 07:44 (#631167) Subject: 5.9 Cummins oil leak in Dodge ( logon | register )ĥ.9 Cummins oil leak in Dodge Jump to page : 1 Now viewing page 1
